What is Polyurethane Moulding and how is it used today?

Midas Pattern Co. is a RIM moulding company that utilises in-house polyurethane plastic RIM moulding to deliver reliable customer service, part quality, and design for manufacture. In a previous article we discussed the environmental impact of polyurethane moulding and our company-wide green initiative – in this article, we dissect the fundamental definition of polyurethane RIM, the process and the industries that make use of RIM in the modern world.

What is Polyurethane Moulding?

Fundamentally, RIM moulding is unlike standard methods of injection moulding – where plastic is melted and injected into a mould to create the desired shape. At its most basic level, polyurethane reaction injection moulding (RIM) involves two separate liquid components being mixed and then injected into a mould, wherein they chemically react to one another, resulting in a cured, solidified plastic polymer.

Types of Polyurethane Moulding:

At Midas Pattern Co., we offer two unique polyurethane moulding processes – FASTrim and MRIM. FASTrim aims to develop rapid prototype polyurethane RIM mouldings, suited to product launches, demo instruments and alpha/beta test machines. On the other hand, MRIM produces accurate tooling parts at a low or high volume (1-5000) for complex undercuts, cast in threads and inserts. Both systems aim to provide a versatile route to market and produce high-quality, durable parts.

Uses of Polyurethane Moulding

At Midas Pattern Co., our reaction injection moulding processes are applicable to a diverse number of industry sectors, including but not exclusive to:

  • Aerospace
  • Analytical Instrumentation
  • Automotive
  • Broadcasting
  • Medical Devices
  • Finishing & Assembly

We aim to use precision polyurethane moulding in order to provide a range of prototype and production polyurethane plastic solutions in flame retardant, UL94/V0-approved materials. Our RIM moulding services are most suited to high-value, innovative, scientific, analytical and medical equipment.

RIM Moulding in the Med-Tech market:

Although our RIM moulding process serves many industries, the Med-Tech sector is one that Midas Pattern Co. have consistently sought to serve as efficiently and safely as possible with our FASTrim and MRIM facilities. As the creators of our own RIM moulding and tooling techniques, we understand the level of detail and precision that is required to ensure product consistency, process control, traceability and record retention within the Med-Tech device creation sector.

From diagnostic machines to DNA sampling, we have used our unique polyurethane moulding process to provide the Medical sector with industry-standard instrument enclosures that are able to withstand the repetitive sanitisation that is paramount to hospital and surgery safety.

Furthermore, our in-house painting, screen-printing and assembly services work to provide the level of attention to detail and quality control that is expected within the Medical sector – cementing Midas Pattern Co. as an instrumental moulding company for Med-Tech devices.

Accredited with ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015 and PAS2060 Scope 1,2, & 3 all audited by NQA Ltd and working in line with ISO 13485 Midas has all necessary accreditation in place to ensure we remain the lowest risk and most ethically green option in the marketplace.
