Midas Provides Front Cover for Successful Medical Laser

  • New polyurethane casing to replace existing aluminium design
  • Adapted CAD model to reduce costs and improve functionality
  • MRIM™ process for quick turnaround on a small batch project

Midas Pattern Company was approached by an intense pulsed light (IPL) manufacturer looking to upgrade their existing system. After seven successful years selling the current model, the client decided it was time to replace the aluminium cover with something more modern.

Formed in 1994 following a management buyout from Manchester University, the Cheshire-based company has established itself as a leading player in the design and manufacture of IPL and laser systems for cosmetic, medical and conservation applications including hair, vein and tattoo removal.

Costing around 50% less than a laser system, the device has proved popular among beauty clinics looking to perform hair removal and skin regeneration procedures. Featuring a modular design, the system can be set-up as IPL only with the option to upgrade to more advanced laser capabilities in the future. The machine was the recipient of the SMART Achievement Award when it was originally unveiled.

The team at Midas Pattern Company were able to suggest using our innovative MRIM™ process which would produce a new, state-of-the-art polyurethane cover at a reasonable price - a move that reflected more closely the performance and capability of this popular machine. Our in-house tooling option is capable of producing parts that include vertical faces, undercuts and metal inserts.

We worked from a 3D CAD model which was adapted by our experts to help minimise manufacturing costs and enhance the functionality of the cover. We relocated the support ribs to gain maximum strength and developed a design for the removable insert which would allow the company to replace the logo should the need ever arise.

The resulting cover was 800mm by 400mm in size and painted in two contrasting colours to help the branding to stand out visually. We also used RFI/EMI paint to coat all internal parts ensuring the device met strict safety regulations. The cover was able to clad the entire front surface of the system, providing our client with a high-quality fascia including inserts and integral aluminium cast parts, helping to simplify the assembly and build-time.

The client was more than happy with the final product, ensuring a new lease of life was given to their already successful IPL system.
