Midas take on a challenge of a different kind for Macmillan Cancer Support

Midas are pleased to announce that their charity of the year for 2008 is Macmillan Cancer Support.

To help raise essential funds for Macmillan the whole of the Midas workforce will be invited to take part in various events through the summer leading up to 'The Midas Three Peak Challenge' on the 24th and 25th September.

The challenge involves climbing the highest mountains in England, Scotland and Wales within the space of 24 hours. The team of six will start with Ben Nevis, go on to Scafell Pike and finish with Snowdon. A huge effort will be needed by the whole team to succeed in the challenge - it is very finely tuned and everything is in the timing - both the climbing and the logistics of getting to the three peaks within the 24 hour timescale. The team are very environmentally aware and every effort will be made not to disturb local people - nothing will be left on the peaks but their footprints.

The team is made up of Alan Rance, Rachel Collier, Melvyn Middleton, Clinton Sparkhall, Darren Franklin and Stephen Read. The team are all hard at work training to achieve their optimum 'peak' fitness levels. The challenge is not to be taken lightly and many teams have failed in the past - not something that the Midas team want to even contemplate. It hasn't been easy - even at this stage various spills and thrills have already taken place - let's hope they get them out of their system before the big event!!

Midas have chosen Macmillan Cancer Support for all the obvious reasons but in addition because they are so driven to help the people they set themselves up to serve.

Macmillan's ambition is to reach and improve the lives of everyone living with cancer. They are a source of support: providing practical, medical, emotional and financial support. They are a force for change: listening to people affected by cancer and working together for better cancer care.

For Stephen and Rachel the challenge doesn't stop at the 'Midas Three Peak Challenge'. On Saturday 27th September Stephen goes on to represent his country as he competes in the Great Britain Masters Judo Tournament. Stephen was awarded a silver medal in last years event - and is hoping to pick up gold this year - if he has enough energy left after the Three Peak Challenge! Rachel goes on to run the prestigious Great North Run, a grueling half marathon on Sunday 5th October - which forms the final part of her personal 'trio' of challenges as she also took part in the Moonwalk Challenge on the 14th June. We wish them all the best and envy them of their energy, drive and determination.
