Midas Sustainability Goals for 2019

Last year, Midas, like many, were horrified by the images shown on the BBC's Blue Planet documentary and were compelled to make a difference going forward.  We did our research to see where we could improve our green credentials and this included reading up on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.  With 17 sustainable development goals (SDG's) this helped focus the mind and help set some achievable goals.

Goal 12 - Responsible Consumption and Production **12 month update

  • Convert all lighting to LED's throughout both factories to reduce our overall energy consumption.
  • Reduce the amount of packaging materials by using recyclable packaging.
  • Ensure all refuse is 100% recycled by our chosen refuse company and continue to seek ways to reduce the amount of waste produced across the business.

Our first goal was to convert all lighting to LED, this has now been completed which is a great starting point to help reduce overall energy consumption.

The second main focus involved waste and a group of Midas’ managers had the rather smelly pleasure of visiting our local recycling plant first-hand to witness how the whole sorting and grading process was managed.

Although it is very encouraging to see how much of our waste is recycled or incinerated to create new energy It is clear that the recycling industry in the UK is still very much in its infancy and driven by cost and profitability. Much more needs to be done to ensure that we as a nation really are genuinely recycling everything that possibly can be recycled.
